What “Keep Laughing” Actually Means (to Me)

Keep Laughing, for me, is not a slogan. It is my motto.

I personally like funny things. That much is true. But sometimes, not every project — and not every commercial — needs to be very funny. Keep Laughing is not a rule that every film must become comedy. It is a reminder that, whether the brief asks for laughs or not, I want the people I work with to feel good in the process. I want to bring a little lightness to the people around me — colleagues, the agency, and the client. Ideally we finish the job pleasantly and with room to breathe.

I have spent about twenty years making commercials and branded films in Hong Kong — directing, producing, and often finishing the work myself in post. Along the way I learned something simple and stubborn: people remember warm collaboration, and they forgive a lot when the work is honest. An honest laugh helps an audience stay open. A lighter room helps a team stay sharp. That is why my personal site and my personal brand are called Keep Laughing. It is not a campaign line for a client. It is a reminder I keep for myself and for the people beside the work.

Humour that does a job (when the film needs a laugh)

Some briefs do need to be funny. In advertising, “funny” is easy to get wrong. You can chase jokes until the brand disappears, or you can protect the message until the film feels like a price list with music. The work I care about sits in the middle: comedy with a job.

A good gag should carry the product, not decorate it. The audience stays for the punchline, and when they leave, they should still know what the brand wanted them to feel or remember. That balance is harder than it looks. It needs a clear brief, talent who can play, and an edit that knows when to get out of the way.

I am not interested in humour that punches down, or humour that exists only to prove we were clever in the room. I am interested in the kind of local, human banter Hong Kong audiences already recognise — the sort of talk you hear in a supermarket aisle, at a dinner table, or in a taxi — shaped carefully enough that it still sells.

Even when the film itself is not a comedy, Keep Laughing still applies: a lighter atmosphere is where people tell the truth, try something, and finish cleanly.

Keep Laughing is personal. Spooky Tree is the company.

A quick distinction, because the names can blur:

Keep Laughing is me — Vincent Lam — the director / producer face. The motto, the storytelling voice, the site you are reading now. When I say #KeepLaughing, I mean stay light enough to take creative risks, and steady enough to finish the film — and leave the people around the work a little happier for having done it together.

Spooky Tree is the production company behind some of that work. The brand idea there is different on purpose: quirky, unlike the ordinary; a tree that grows both ways — creativity reaching up, roots staying in the client’s brand. Spooky Tree is meant to stay thin on this site. The person you meet here is Keep Laughing.

Black and white keeps the frame honest. If a little botanic green shows up, fine. The point is clarity, not costume.

Owning the story from set to cut

One practical reason the motto stuck: I often own the work through post-production. When direction and finishing live close together, the film can move faster. Notes land while the performances are still warm. Timing jokes do not die in a long handoff. Clients get a cut while the moment still matters.

Speed is not the same as rushing. Speed is knowing what the scene is for before you shoot it, and cutting with the same intention afterward. That is production thinking I want this blog to share — not as theory, but as the habits that keep a commercial film watchable and on brand.

What you will find here

This blog is for people who commission stories: brand managers, agency producers, partners who need a film that feels local and still ships on time. You will see notes on set craft, how I think about performance and punchlines, and the occasional look back at work that taught me something worth keeping.

I will not pretend every shoot was effortless. The best results usually arrive under pressure — a real location, a short runway, a team that trusts each other enough to leave space for the unexpected. That pressure is part of the craft. Keep Laughing is what I try to bring inside that pressure: humanity, and a little lightness.

If you are building something for Hong Kong audiences and you want storytelling that stays human, I would rather talk in plain language than pitch you a moodboard of buzzwords. Keep laughing. Then make sure the brand still lands.

Keep laughing。
